The competition took place in Great Britain.

At the prestigious Global Cheese Awards held in the British town of Frome, which this year included a thousand of selected cheeses from all over the world, the Špin dairy, owned by Agrolaguna, won two important awards for its cheeses, confirming it is at the very top of the world cheese production. Agrolaguna’s Špin sheep milk cheese won a silver medal, while Gran Istriano received a bronze medal, reports Agrobiz.hr on September 11, 2018.

The Global Cheese Awards is a prestigious competition held in Frome for nearly 160 years, In addition to many of the best cheese producers, it attracts more than 20,000 visitors every year.

“The two awards which we have won in the competition of cheeses from around the world are another proof of the quality of Špin cheeses and of the tradition we have been nurturing for more than 30 years. We are proud of our sheep milk cheese with which we started our production. It is made from the milk of indigenous Istrian sheep. The extra hard cheese, Gran Istriano, which matures for at least 12 months and is produced in 11-kg wheels, has also been recognized,” said Krunoslav Salaj, a specialist at the Špin dairy.

In addition to award-winning cheeses, a special jury recommendation was also given to soft cheese made from mixed sheep and cow milk, which is only being developed at the dairy. Given the high marks received by the new cheese, Agrolaguna will launch its commercialization process, after which it will be available on the retail chain shelves.

After numerous local awards and acknowledgments, as well as last year’s outstanding success at the World Cheese Awards in London, where Špin took a gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze, the latest awards are another proof of its continued quality. Additionally, Špin is the only Istrian dairy which has won international awards.

Špin cheeses are produced exclusively from fresh milk whose quality is controlled by Agrolaguna’s experts and have been part of the Agrolagunina tradition for many years. No adjustments are made to the milk, so the taste of cheeses is subject to the seasonal variations of the pastures, which makes them unique. The dairy is located at Stancija Špin in Tar, only a 10-minute drive from Poreč.

In addition to the award-winning cheeses, the dairy also produces cow milk cheese, mixed cheese made from cow and sheep milk, cow cheese matured in Terrano wine, cow cheese matured in Muškat wine, and mixed cheese in walnut leaves. In the category of semi-hard cheeses, the dairy produces cow cheese with olives and cow cheese with truffles.
