Could Split’s Spaladium Arena transform into a Hollywood film studio?
Split has been awarded a golden offer to host a major American series for four years, whose entire production would be based in Croatia, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on February 16, 2019.
Specifically, the Americans are looking to hire Spaladium Arena, which they would turn into a massive film studio. The offer is said to be for $250,000 net monthly and they would pay all the costs of the complex.
The filmmaker’s offer was discussed behind closed doors on Friday at the Commercial Court in Split, by the Creditors Committee of the company “Sports City in Bankruptcy”, which is owned by Spaladium Arena.
Representatives of banks in Austria, which financed the construction of this sports complex, and the Deputy State Attorney in Split, sit in the Committee.
Before a handshake confirms the transformation of Split into Hollywood, they would need to resolve who would pay the possible penalties for the organizers of the already agreed events at the Arena, but also free up the large parking space in front of Arena which is rented to the Split Parking company and which, in July, is used by the organizers of the Ultra Europe Festival, which is held every summer at the neighboring Poljud.
These are small problems, however, with respect to the considerable benefit this could bring to Split and its citizens.
The offer received by the company “Sports City in Bankruptcy” is by no means a mere matter of luck, but the hard work of its leaders who want to turn Spaladium Arena into one of the largest film studios in this part of Europe. Particularly aimed at blockbusters, a few years ago, they were close to turning the Arena into a film studio for “Robin Hood”, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio.
