Don’t miss the first photography exhibition in Split in 2016, opening just 5 minutes after the New Year bells.

On the first day of the New Year, at five minutes after midnight on 1 January 2016, a traditional New Year’s photo exhibition will be opened at the Gallery of the Split Photo Club at the Marmontova Street. It will be the first cultural event in Croatia in 2016, reports Dalmacijanews on December 30, 2015.

“Just after midnight, we will open an exhibition of photographic images of one of the most celebrated photographers from Split, master of photography Ante Verzotti, titled ‘My Road to Emmaus’. In 16 photos and large photographic images, the exhibition will present Biblical motifs which the author has found in contemporary city of Split and the surrounding areas”, Ivan Ugrin said.

“For me, Emmaus is anywhere and anytime. It represents my thoughts which lead me towards a selected goal which is often not clearly defined. The destinations generally look different from what we expect, but the faith in the fulfilment of set goals creates favouring coincidences. There is almost not a single photograph which has not happened by coincidence, and lately it has been happening so often that I no longer believe it to be a coincidence. Are you perhaps wondering how do I know that I am going in the right direction and that I have not been lost? I am being led by faith and not by sight, which means that I know something even though I do not know it. You may say that it does not make any sense, but it does not need to make sense, because it is faith. However, I always feel like somebody is leading me in my wanderings. In the 16 exhibited photographic images, I am trying to convince myself and you that we are moving towards a new Emmaus and a better world” – that is how Verzotti tried to describe his thoughts which he transformed into the 16 photographs.

In 2016, the Split Photo Club will celebrate 60 years of the Photographic Gallery in Marmontova Street, and Verzotti’s exhibition is just the first part of the celebrations. The exhibition will close on 18 January, and the sponsors of the exhibition are the City of Split and the Split Tourist Board.
