Summer Paradise, Winter Wasteland: Saharun Beach Swamped with Debris (Video)

One of the most iconic Croatian beaches turns into a wasteland in winter months – in the most literal sense of the word

We keep going on and on about cleanup actions taking place all over the Adriatic coast. It might seem weird, reading about some of Croatian beaches being ridden with waste; all the images you can find online tend to dazzle the viewer with pristine strips of sand and enchanting azure waters.

And yet, in winter, the picture is not as pretty as it otherwise seems. Massive quantities of debris are washed up by the sea, be it of natural origin – such as wood, leaves and algae – or man-made waste like plastic and rubber.

Photographer Boris Kačan of Morski.hr caught one such situation on video, documenting the current state of Saharun beach on Dugi Otok island. Saharun is usually known as one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Croatia, but as soon as summer comes to a close, it drops out of the public eye – and the waste keeps piling on. See for yourself:

We don’t doubt Saharun will soon get cleaned up and welcome its first visitors of 2018 in an impeccable state. This video only serves to show why each of those cleanup actions is of extreme importance, allowing for our natural wonders to shine on thanks to a handful of eco-conscious enthusiasts.

Want to help? Next time you find yourself on a Croatian beach – or any beach in the world, for that matter – and notice some trash lying around, grab a bag and fill it with items that don’t belong on the shore. Every effort counts!
