SuperUho Pre-Party with Mac DeMarco at Močvara

Daniela Rogulj

It has been almost three years since Mac DeMarco and his band premiered in Croatia at Art-kino Grič, with one of the best concerts to mark the 14th Žedno uho Festival. In the meantime, Mac DeMarco has released two new studio albums, dozens of EP’s and demo releases, and traveled thousands of kilometers playing hundreds of sold out concerts and festivals. A once small band which has now become one to look forward to, tomorrow, July 8th, at Močvara in Zagreb sees the return of DeMarco to promote his latest studio release, “Another One”.

Canadian multi-instrumentalist and multimedia artist Mac DeMarco first appeared in the music scene in 2008 under complete anonymity while under the pseudonym Makeout Videotape. Immediately after graduating from high school, he moved from his native Edmonton to a much warmer Vancouver and mustered up his first record “Heat Wave,” a collection of songs written and recorded in periods of boredom and resentment while adjusting to the new environment of Vancouver. Limited edition CDs sold out in record time, and Makeout Videotape embarked on their first tour.

The band quickly gained regional recognition, were signed by Unfamiliar Records, and went on tour with well known Japandroids in the fall of 2009. Over the next few years, Mac DeMarco, along with Alex Calder and Jenna Clement, acquired an even greater local and regional popularity playing across Canada.

In a sudden reversal, 2012 saw Mac DeMarco issue the EP “Rock and Roll Night Club” under his own name, and on his own record label Captured Tracks. Through this new work he kept the simple lo-fi pop form from Makeout videotapes but drew a story with a darker atmosphere, drawing inspiration from the internal space of lonely souls. In the same year, DeMarco released his first album, “2”, which launched high to the top of indie charts, marking the first major solo tour when he first came to Zagreb.

After a long and exhaustive 1.5 year tour, DeMarco released his second album in 2014, “Salad Days”, a more intimate and more mature album than its predecessor. This album also fully met expectations and criticisms, and by the end of the year ranked in the top of the most relevant charts.

In the short break between his endless touring, Mac DeMarco issued a mini album in the summer of 2015 titled “Another One” on the label Captured Tracks. This album was No. 1 on Billboard’s “Top Rock Albums” chart, and also became the best-selling DeMarco studio release.

Funny and honest, cheerful and unburdened, Mac DeMarco and his band will surely make another great show that we will long remember.
