Fingers crossed!

With more than 66 thousand fans on Facebook, Tomislav Perko is one of the most popular Croatian travel writers, and most certainly the most adventurous one – after losing his job as a stock broker in Zagreb in 2008, Tomislav decided to make a strange move for somebody who had just lost his job – travel.

Despite having no family support or financial support, he decided to persevere and a few years later, he went on a trip around the world, which included visiting Australia, Africa, South America, Asia, and many European countries.
The journey took three years and it inspired him to write his first book, 1000 Days of Spring, and then, after he visited New Zealand and Bali, he wrote 1000 Days of Summer.

All of this is already impressive enough, but Tomislav did it on a $10 budget, which is really admirable.

Now, as he says himself, his parents are forcing him to find a real job, so he decided to apply for a position of the Croatian National Tourist Board director (which we wrote about here) in NY.
As we’re sure you know, Croatia is a land of uhljebs.

Whenever you see someone in a high-ranking position, chances are he or she got there using politics, family connections, you know the drill.

Tomislav opens the video saying that this is one of the reasons he chose not to apply – everyone told him that someone already had people to fill the position, but, Tomislav says he’s an optimist, so he decided to apply anyway.
He continues listing all the qualifications he has – he’s young, proactive, ambitious, well-travelled, speaks foreign languages fluently, has a degree in Tourism, and is a hard-working and very motivated (and motivational) person.
The video got more than 3,500 likes, and it was posted less than 24 hours ago.

The comments are overwhelmingly positive, even though there are some great sarcastic ones – one comment said that someone with his experience and competence level has no way of getting the job, simply because he fulfils all the requirements, unlike an uhljeb with strong family connections, and the other one stated: “Dear Mr… sorry, Director Perko. When you get this job, an uhljeb will die, and my faith in a better tomorrow in Croatia will be restored.”

Fingers crossed, Tomislav!
