Due to Lack of Workforce, Bjelovar Cafes Could Resort to Unusual Measures…

You just can’t get the staff…

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 14th of April, 2018, many tourism and catering facilities in the Republic of Croatia are increasingly facing a very serious problem – finding a workforce. There is a huge demand in the market for waiters and chefs, especially when the busy summer season starts.

Recently, a similar concerning story from Split has also emerged, where a caterer closed his restaurant on the eve of the season because he just could not find anyone to work there.

As the Bjelovar.live portal writes, similar scenarios could also take place in Bjelovar where many cafes are hit with the same issue, and owners are also preparing for an unusual situation – to introduce a non-working day.

“There are twenty waiters missing on Korzo alone at the moment, and all the cafe owners are struggling to finish shifts. There are simply no workers, so people have started to think that the worst day of the week traffic wise is just not worth bothering working on at all. There’s no other solution because it’s impossible to secure a free day for everyone,” stated Igor Prka for the local Bjelovar portal. Prka, otherwise the public relations leader in the Coner group, added that the situation with chefs is even more of a difficult one.

”There’s even more difficulty because you have to hire someone who’s schooled. Everyone who knows how to work goes either abroad or with a large tourist company,”

He also says that paying a proper salary isn’t an issue at all.

”In Bjelovar, they’re getting five thousand kuna plus tips/benefits so this can’t be a reason to avoid working. And the chefs have even higher incomes,” concluded Prka.
