Lauren Simmonds

2017’s maritime traffic has grown at a double-digit rate!

As Poslovni Dnevnik reports on the 5th of September, 2017, according to data from the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure (MMPI), on lines connecting the Republic of Croatia with foreign countries, 81,977 passengers were transported, which is 21.6% more than during the same period of 2016.

In domestic maritime traffic, the numbers are seemingly very good, these figures include including fast-shipping lines. A huge 6,687,267 passengers were transported, which is 10% more than during the same period last year. The data was collected with Croatia being divided into three maritime areas: Rijeka saw growth of 11.2%, Split saw 9.5% growth, and Zadar saw 7.2% growth.

Six Croatian ports which serve international traffic (Rijeka, Zadar, Šibenik, Split, Ploče and Dubrovnik) are of particular economic interest.

This year, the Ministry has managed to secure HRK 306 million from the state budget for the implementation of numerous initiated projects. Fishing is also on the agenda.

Up until now, the Ministry has allocated HRK 36.6 million to co-finance the construction of fishing infrastructure in ports in Kali, Klenovica, Sumartin, Novalja, Pula, Vela Luka, Tribunj, Butina-Murter, Vira and Rogoznica. Agreements and contracts have also been signed in Zadar, Gaženica, Brižine, Peleš, Novalja and Sustjepan. HRK 43.5 million has been invested in co-financing so far.

In the coming months, an EU tender for financing infrastructure construction in county and local ports, otherwise worth 150 million kuna, will be announced. This will see funds allocated for an impressive fourteen projects in seven coastal counties. These are investments that will increase accessibility when it comes to inhabited islands and improve overall service to the islands throughout the year.
