Knin Going Through Difficult Economic Times

Total Croatia News

The town is in the centre of attention every August, but is forgotten through the rest of the year.

In early August, when Croatia celebrates the Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day, all eyes turn towards Knin. However, for most people, the town only exists during that few celebratory days. During the rest of the year, the town is left on its own, and it is going through a severe economic crisis, reports Poslovni.hr on August 4, 2016.

The town which in 1995 become the symbol of Croatia’s victory in the Homeland War, last year had just 75 registered companies which employed 452 people in total. For comparison, the municipality of Viškovo near Rijeka has the same number of inhabitants, around 15,000 of them, but it has 503 companies which employ 2,113 persons. Of the total number of entrepreneurs in Knin, just 49 reported a profit. An analysis shows that the number of employed persons in Knin in the last five years has decreased significantly. For example, the number of employed persons in 2011 was 653. During that period, the number of employees was reduced by several local companies, including Krka and Knauf, while the company Krka Plastika, which in 2011 had 38 employees, moved its headquarters to Samobor.

All the companies in Knin achieved total profits of 3.5 million kuna last year. The largest employer in Knin is Proizvodno Trgovački Centar Knin (PTCK) with 78 employees. The largest company by revenue is a logistics and transportation company Sirovina Benz Transport, which had revenues of 56 million kuna. The second place went to PTCK with 38.1 million kuna. The largest profits were achieved by Transport Beton Lubina with 0.9 million kuna.

The whole Šibenik-Knin County had 2,052 companies and 11,570 employed persons, which is four percent more than the year before. However, despite the growing number of businesses, their total revenues of 5.38 billion kuna in 2015 were 11.2 percent lower than in 2014. Over the last year, there was a significant decline in exports, by 47.2 percent, which was mostly the result of problems at TLM Aluminium. In 2014, TLM had exports worth 622.5 million kuna, while last year the exports decreased to 96.5 million kuna. The largest employer in the county is the hotel and tourist company Solaris with 624 employees. The company with the largest profits in the county is the company for production of building materials Knauf with 29.5 million kuna in net profits. The company, based in Uzdolje near Knin, has about 100 employees.
