Unemployment in Croatia Falls to 11%

The labour force survey unemployment is lower in percentage terms than the administrative unemployment rate reported by the Croatian Employment Service.

The unemployment rate in Croatia dropped to 11 percent in the second quarter, compared to 12.8 percent in the second quarter of last year, according to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics gathered by the labour force survey method, reports N1 on October 28, 2017.

The unemployment rate in the second quarter was 3.1 percentage points lower than in the first quarter of 2017 when it stood at 14.1 percent.

In the second quarter, there were 201,000 unemployed persons in Croatia, which is 35,000 less than in the second quarter of 2016. The comparison of data on unemployment obtained by the labour force survey and by other statistical data based on administrative sources shows that in the second quarter the unemployment rate according to administrative records was higher (11.9 percent) than the labour force survey rate of unemployment (11 percent).

In the same period, the average number of unemployed persons according to the survey was higher by about 16,000 than the administrative data. A comparison of data shows that, of the total 201,000 unemployed persons according to the survey, 150,000 or 74,5 percent of them were registered at the CES. At the same time, out of a total of 185,000 registered persons at the CES, about 35,000 or 18.8 percent did not meet the international criteria to be considered unemployed.

In the second quarter of this year, according to the labour force survey, there were 1.63 million employed persons, which is an increase of about 88,000 compared to the previous quarter and approximately 26,000 more than in the second quarter of last year.

Thus, the employment rate stood at 46 percent in the second quarter of this year, which is an increase compared to the quarter before when the figure was 43.5 percent, but also an increase on an annual basis since the employment rate in the second quarter of 2016 was at 45 percent.

According to the labour force survey data, in the second quarter of this year, there were 3.55 million persons of the population aged 15 or over in Croatia, of which 1.83 million were active (employed or unemployed), while 1.71 million people were inactive.

The activity rate, which shows the share of active among the working age population, in the second quarter of this year stood at 51.7 percent, which is 1.1 percentage points higher than in the previous quarter (50.6 percent), and the same as in the second in the quarter of 2016.
