June the 9th, 2025 – Croatia has ratified the Global Oceans Treaty (Marine Biodiversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction), and Greenpeace has welcomed the country’s unanimous decision.
As Morski writes, Greenpeace has wholly welcomed the unanimous decision of the Croatian Parliament to ratify the Global Ocean Treaty (Marine Biodiversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction), which, fittingly, came right on the eve of World Oceans Day this year.
By ratifying the Global Oceans Treaty, Croatia has officially joined the ranks of countries that recognise the crucial role of the oceans and seas of the world in climate stability and biodiversity conservation. Greenpeace has now called on Croatia to actively participate in the implementation of the Treaty, enabling its swift and effective implementation.
“The Republic of Croatia has taken an important step towards protecting the world’s oceans, fittingly, on the eve of World Oceans Day which fell on the 8th of June. It’s now crucial that this ratification doesn’t remain in a mere symbolic form, but that concrete measures are implemented for the preservation of the oceans and the sustainable management of marine resources. We’re now calling on Croatia to officially deposit its instrument of ratification as early as next week, during the Third UN Conference on the World Oceans (UNOC) in Nice. We’re also calling on the country to show its support the declaration of a global moratorium on deep-sea mining,” Greenpeace Croatia stated.
Greenpeace otherwise works diligently to urge governments around the world to speed up the ratification process. The aim is make sure the aforementioned Treaty can enter into force as soon as possible and enable the achievement of the valuable goal of protecting 30% of the oceans and seas by the year 2030.
