June the 8th, 2025 – A new look has been provided to Zagreb Train Station (Glavni kolodvor) as part of a much wider investment in its upgrading and maintenance.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, following several months of hard work, Zagreb now has a fully renovated railway entrance to the city – the pedestrian underpass at Zagreb Train Station. In addition to the renovation of the building itself, the walls were finally painted in the style of street art featuring motifs from the HŽ Infrastruktura (Infrastructure) educational and preventive campaign called “The train is always faster”. Various symbols of the City of Zagreb are easily recognisable.
The new look for Zagreb Train Station has come as a result of extensive renovation works worth around 60,000 euros. It included the repair of the walls and ceilings, the tiling on the walls and the beautiful marble coverings on the staircase entrances. Old graffiti was cleaned off from the stone slabs and on the wall’s advertising boards, and new waste bins, electrical installations, lighting, and video surveillance were installed. The works on the new look for Zagreb Train Station began at the end of January this year and was finally completed in early April.
In addition to the construction and technical interventions, local street art artist Jure Ereš provided a special touch by painting the entire underpass.
“I actually spent my youth, so to speak, at this station. I travelled to school by train every day and I passed through the subway thousands of times. It was an honour for me to come and be able to do this because I’m a native of Zagreb, I’ve been drawing all my life and this is definitely the crowning glory of my artistic career,” said Ereš.
The painting project began with sketches on paper, then conceptual solutions. Following that, he worked almost every single day, and sometimes at night, throughout the month of May. Many passersby and curious onlookers stopped to watch this talented artist at work.
