September the 12th, 2024 – Eastern Croatian counties are somewhat surprisingly leading in terms of employment growth, with the likes of Vukovar-Srijem and Osijek-Baranja leaping forward.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, at the end of August this year, 87,986 unemployed persons were registered in the records of the Croatian Employment Service (CES), which is 18.1% or 19,401 less than in August 2023, according to CES reports.

Compared to July this year, the number of unemployed persons increased by 0.2% or 188 persons. According to the daily data taken by the CES, 86,166 unemployed persons are currently registered at the Institute, with 21,458 job vacancies being advertised. During the month of August, 9,335 persons were newly registered in the CES unemployment register, which is 29.8% less than back in August 2023.

9,147 gained jobs and were removed from the unemployment register, which is 5.5% less than in August last year. Recorded employment based on an employment relationship was most often realised in wholesale and retail trade, where 781 persons or 14.5% of those listed found work. Those economic activities were closely followed by the processing industry with 774 people or 14.4%. Then came the provision of accommodation, food preparation and service with 499 people or 9.3%, followed by the construction sector with 472 people or 8.8% of the total sum.

In August this year, 2,912 persons were removed from the unemployment register due to other reasons in accordance with the law, such as leaving the workforce (retirement, inclusion in regular education), non-compliance with legal provisions, voluntary de-registration from the register, etc.

Among the counties, eastern Croatian counties surprisingly dominated the employment register – in a positive manner. Osijek-Baranja County lead the way, with 815 persons or 15.1% of the total number of employees being removed from the register owing to employment. Then came Vukovar-Srijem County. Far from the eastern Croatian counties, Split-Dalmatia County (674 persons) were the leaders in employment.
