A wonderful new initiative combining two of Croatia’s best year-round tourism potentials – wine and cycling – has its maiden run on the island of Korcula next month.
It if the home of Marco Polo, delicious indigenous wines including the vowel-choked and unpronounceable Grk, and excellent cycling routes through lush green fields and vineyards, and a new initiative to celebrate wine, cycling and heritage will take place next month with the inaugural Ciklo G.E.T. Tour, announced the organisers, Croatian wine journalists from G.E.T. Report, on April 29, 2016.
The three-day event, from May 13-15, will allow participants to experience the very best of the island’s heritage, natural beauty, with four cycling routes over a leisurely three days, taking in the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of this popular Dalmatian island.
Starting in Vela Luka and an additional cycle around Blato, the second day is centred on the Posip heartlands of Smokvica and Brna, before the final day in the fabled sandy vineyards of the indigenous Grk variety in Lumbarda and Korcula Town. In addition to wine tasting, other local natural treasures will be sampled, such as honey and olive oil.
Cycling and wine are two of the great potential attractions for Croatia, which is looking to extend its season beyond the beach and sun summer stereotype. Thousands of kilometres of bike routes have been added in recent years, and the winemakers are slowly getting more organised as the international wine community takes a greater interest in the land of 130 indigenous varieties.
The potential of cycling and wine tourism – both individually and combined – is a huge opportunity for Croatia, and initiatives such as the Ciklo G.E.T. Tour are welcome. To find out more information about the programme and to register for the event, visit the official website.
