1050 kilometers by bike in honour of those who died for Croatia’s freedom.
As DuList reported on the 3rd of July, 2017, keen cyclists have finally arrived in the Pearl of the Adriatic after completing the ninth bicycle ultramarathon all the way from Vukovar, at the other end of the country.
The ten energetic cyclists from the “Brod Bicycle Association”, are mostly Croatian war veterans and their children. The group cycled an eye-watering 1050 kilometers through areas of the country which suffered considerable war damage, eventually ending up right here in our city.
The Marathon began at Ovčara, in memory of the founding of the 108th Brigade of the Croatian Army from Slavonski Brod. Ovčara is a site now tragically infamous for the brutal massacre of more than 250 innocent victims, both Croatian war veterans and civilians, the likes of which had not been seen in Europe since the Second World War.
Dubrovnik and Vukovar share a very special relationship and a deep bond, both cities suffered horrendous damage and unseen brutality during the war, both cities put up an incredible defence and both are known as ”Hero Cities”, making the location of the end of the ride all the more symbolic.
