September the 23rd, 2024 – Where couldn’t possibly be better during the off-season? If you said “Hvar”, then you’re correct. Hvar, a Dalmatian gem known as Croatia’s premier island is set to host the exciting (and gruelling) Spartan World Championships 2024.

Croatia doesn’t get a lot of loving internationally when the temperatures drop and the clouds roll in. Less stable weather and slimmer chances for a dip in the sparkling Adriatic render much of the wider public disinterested in the Croatian coast. It used to be as if the entire country vanished off the face of the planet come mid-September, but over recent years that has gradually been altering.

Now, more events take place in the much more tolerable, and (in my opinion) far more pleasurable ambience of an “off-season” Croatia. Off-season Hvar is a special treat indeed for all who visit it when the sun’s summer anger finally calms, and the organisers of the Spartan World Championships 2024 clearly agree.

What goes hand in hand with lower temperatures and less crowds, you ask? Adventure tourism.

Croatia is known for its self-limiting brand of tourism – sunshine and sea. That alone renders it a victim to the seasons, and is largely unsustainable. Adventure tourism has blossomed in this country, and plenty of events, including sporting ones like races, take to our shores when the sunbeds go into hibernation.

Previously synonymous with partying and all of that not so good stuff that goes with it, Hvar’s image has taken a positive turn of late. Adventure tourism is now bedding itself into the island’s tourism offer permanently, and this geologically and geographically marvellous island certainly has a lot to offer. Difficult terrain and an irregular, deeply indented coastline provide a challenge that is difficult to resist for many athletes, and off-season Hvar clearly proved the perfect place for the Spartan Championships 2024 to take place.

what can we expect this year?

On October the 11th this year, the chance to win a very handsome 100,000 USD will be made available to all those who choose to head to Hvar for something quite different to lounging on the beach, getting sunburned and nursing a hangover.

The sweat-inducing Sprint 5k and 100m will take place as part of the Spartan World Championships 2024 over the 11th to the 13th of October. The 100m World Championship will from from the 11th to the 12th of October, and the Sprint 5k World Championship is scheduled for the 13th of October. That isn’t all, however, as additional events include the heart-pounding Beast 21K (12th of October), Super 10K (13th of October), and the programme’s races for children (on the 11th of October).

Challenging your body against one of the most beautiful backdrops imaginable is a fantastic way to kick off autumn. From the iconic Dalmatian stone houses and red tile roofs to the palm trees to the rugged hills, this is an island that impresses. Off-season Hvar and the Spartan World Championships 2024 are turning the view of a former party island around. You’ll need to stock up on magnesium and not pre-drinks for this one.

If you fancy conquering Hvar in a way that looks a bit different to sunstroke and smells nothing like rakija, sign up for the Spartan Championships 2024 here. It’s a challenge your body will thank you for (even if it doesn’t quite feel like it at first).
