INmusic #16 to Host The Smashing Pumpkins in Croatia

October, 27, 2023 – After an Ed Sheeran concert was announced for August next year, the 16th edition of one of the biggest Croatian music festivals, INmusic is coming through with more exciting news. It looks like 2024 will also see The Smashing Pumpkins in Croatia! One of the most influential alt-rock bands is the second confirmed headliner of INmusic festival #16, along with The National.

As Glas Slavonije writes, The Smashing Pumpkins is one of the key bands that marked the sound of the nineties with its unique mix of psychedelia, heavy metal riffs, art rock, shoegaze and dreamy lyricism. The band was founded in Chicago in 1988 by frontman and guitarist Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha, bassist D’arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. With their debut album “Gish” in 1991, they won over music critics and were included in the first row of the upcoming grunge wave, which would conquer the world scene in the following years. It was followed by the multi-platinum “Siamese Dream” (1993), which, along with commercial success and hit singles “Today”, “Cherub Rock”, “Disarm” and “Rocket”, was unanimously recognized by music critics as one of the best alt-rock albums of all time.

Two years later, The Smashing Pumpkins released the conceptual album “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”, which reached number one on the Billboard charts with multi-platinum status, and the singles “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”, “Tonight, Tonight” and “1979” brought the group a Grammy, two MTV Video Music Awards and an American Music Award for Best Alternative Band. Turbulent years under the magnifying glass of the world public and changes in the composition of the band in 2000 resulted in the formal breakup of the band.

Billy Corgan, the main author of the group, reformed The Smashing Pumpkins in 2005 and released five studio albums with changes in the line-up. James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin returned to the band in 2018, and in November 2022, the successive release of the triple album “Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts” began, the final act of which saw the light of day in May of this year. It is a studio rock opera in 33 songs that thematically continues the predecessors “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” and “Machina/The Machines of God”. It undoubtedly testifies to the exceptional creative energy of the band that has sold more than 30 million records. INmusic #16 in June 2024 will be the first time for The Smashing Pumpkins in Croatia.

INmusic festival returns to the Jarun islands for its 16th edition, from June 24 to 26, 2024. Three-day festival tickets are available through the official festival web shop at a price of 89 euros (+ transaction costs).
