korčula infrastructure project

August the 3rd, 2023 – The largest Korčula infrastructure project to date is currently being realised, the aim of which is to solve many of the island’s traffic issues.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the implementation of the largest Korčula infrastructure project in the history of the island is now underway. To be more specific, a brand new port is being built – Polačište – worth more than 25 million euros in total. It should solve some of the longstanding traffic problems on Korčula, according to a report from HRT.

Croatia’s shiny new bridge didn’t solve everything…

Now that we’re in the very heart of the tourist season, and after the opening of the long awaited Pelješac Bridge last summer, there’s a lot of traffic pressure on the Pelješac peninsula, and therefore on nearby Korčula. Vehicles arriving on and off the ferry find it difficult to pass through the narrow old streets in Orebić, and the ferries themselves are almost always entirely full. As such, we can say with confidence that the new port of Polačište is one of the most anticipated projects in Korčula’s infrastructure and transport history. Part of this project is the improvement of the port in Perna, as well as the bypass that would relieve Orebić of its traffic issues. According to announcements, work on these projects should begin this autumn.

More efficiency in coping with crowds in summer

“With the construction of this new port, we’re sure that it will be ready to accept all the crowds that can and do occur at unplanned moments, as well as all vehicle capacities,” said Ante Tvrdeić, the director of the Korčula County Port Authority.

“Numerous problems that we’ve had to experience will enter the history books and no longer cause us issues after this is completed. The premise for this is the construction of a new port, the construction of the access road to the state road on Korčula, as well as the construction of Perna and the Orebić bypass”, stated Branko Bačić, the Minister of Spatial Planning, Construction and State Property.
