While there are many new business towers being built in Croatia’s capital, new residential skyscrapers are non-existent.

Many people walking on the Ilica westwards towards Črnomerec have wondered for years why a plot of land near the Exit Theatre was empty and why it served as a private parking lot for cars of nearby residents. It seemed impossible that such a valuable piece of real estate could remain empty for long, reports Večernji List on June 21, 2016.

The enigma has now been solved, with the news about the construction of a residential and business skyscraper at the location. It will probably be one of the most interesting interpolations that will have been constructed in the last 50 years. The plot at the corner of Ilica and Mandaličina Street will soon be the location of the Crystal Centre, a skyscraper with 19 floors.

The whole story began as early as 1985. It took more than two decades for all the legal red tape to be solved. “We were faced with the complexity of resolving ownership issues and the complexity of the location itself, so the procedure was unusually long”, said Ivana Stanić from the Stanograd construction company that will build the towers.

The special feature of the building is the fact that this will be the first residential skyscraper in Zagreb built in the last 25 years. The towers have been designed by renowned architect Goran Rako and will consists of residential units starting from the 5th floor (luxury apartments from 50 to 170 square metres), a hotel with four stars and 60-odd units of commercial and office areas, which will host multi-purpose facilities such as kindergarten, restaurants, clinics, offices and a fitness and wellness centre with a swimming pool.

“The apartments will be located in two modern residential towers which will be connected with glass bridges. The apartments will have glass walls to the south side that will provide a panoramic view of the city, while the northern side will look towards the Medvednica Mountain”, said Stanić.

The building will have an underground garage for residents and for users of the facilities offered by the centre. The construction is expected to be finished by 2018.
