February the 10th, 2024 – A Zagreb FER team has won a prestigious international competition in robotics in Abu Dhabi.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, a Zagreb FER team (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Zagreb) has won at the prestigious international robotics competition in Abu Dhabi.

What secured them this award was their commendable project of cooperation between unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned ships in performing complex tasks such as locating intruder vessels, detecting illegal cargo, and capturing and transporting objects in an environment without a global satellite navigation system.

The Zagreb FER team consists of experts from the Laboratory for Robotics and Intelligent Control Systems (LARICS) and the Laboratory for Underwater Systems and Technologies (LABUST) under the mentorship of Professor Stjepan Bogdan and Professor Nikola Misković.

Despite the initial strong competition from around fifty talented teams from prestigious universities around the world, including Lockheed Martin and the world-renowned MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Zagreb FER team led by Dr. Barbara Arbanas Ferreira first made it to the top five teams and was eventually declared the winner.

In the grand final, FER fought side by side with some major international research institutions such as KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology) and DTU (Technical University of Denmark) and were deservedly declared the winning team and awarded this prestigious award, putting Croatian innovation in the spotlight yet again.

One of the most prestigious robotics competitions on Earth, sponsored by the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, it is held every few years in Abu Dhabi. The goal of the competition was to create a fully autonomous unmanned ship that could transport cargo from another ship in cooperation with unmanned craft such as drones.

FER has stated that this latest award is yet more confirmation and proof that this Zagreb faculty has no problem in standing side by side with highly respected universities around the world with the quality of its teaching and research.
