Split school entering the digital age with e-register pilot project.

Three years ago, “Manuš” Elementary School in Split has introduced an e-Register system, which has proved to be an easier, faster and better way of keeping records. The information about grades is available to parents and students at all times, while teachers do not have access to student grades in other subjects, so they can be more objective in their assessment, reports Dalmacija News on November 29, 2015.

“This is the third year that we have been using the e-Register system. Although initially there have been certain doubts, now everybody is very satisfied. Parents can quickly see their children’s grades. Also, for me as the principal, it was very important to increase the objectivity of the grades. Now, teachers can only see grades for their own subjects, which means their assessment of a student is more objective. The new system has certainly been an improvement”, school principal Marita Guć said.

This year, the school signed up to a pilot project worth 300 million kuna “E-Schools: Establishing the Development of Digital Schools”. “It was somehow logical to apply to the CARNET’s pilot project for e-schools. EU funds provide 85 percent of the necessary money, while the rest is covered by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports. For the first phase of the project, CARNET selected 105 schools and we are one of them. In order to even get the chance to participate in the project, we had to go through a certain procedure and get support from our founder, which is the City of Split”, Guć said.

“At the beginning of 2016, CARNET will equip the school with computers for administrative and technical staff, while teachers will receive tablets. The classrooms will also be better equipped”, the principal explained. The ultimate goal of the project is for digital material to be exchanged with other schools in Croatia and other European countries.

“Manuš” Elementary School is already cooperating with schools from Croatia and abroad. “Three teachers have visited Portugal in October last year. We have recently returned from Romania, and on 6 December eight students along with four teachers will travel to Turkey, where we will discuss further project activities. Also, we are cooperating with a school from Slavonski Brod”, the principal concluded.
