August the 20th, 2026 – A special Omiš donation account has had its details published as help arrives from across Croatia.
Poslovni reports that around ten residential containers have already been sent to Omiš, and companies are also offering to donate finished housing units. Damage assessment has begun in the Omiš area after the catastrophic fire that left devastation from Lokva Rogoznica to Omiš. Around 50 houses burned down, just as many were damaged, and a long recovery lies ahead for the residents. In addition to the consequences of the fire, landslides and rockfalls now also pose a threat.
Burned land, destroyed houses, hospitality facilities and cars are the scenes that greet residents and services on the ground. HEP workers are being helped by numerous volunteers in restoring infrastructure, and part of the area still has no electricity. An additional problem lies with the now unstable rocks and terrain without vegetation. During the night rocks fell twice in the Borko area, and two Civil Protection teams from Zagreb are using drones to inspect the rock mass above Omiš and Lokva Rogoznica, HRT reports.
expert assessments
Deputy Mayor of Omiš Ivan Pivčević said that experts will specifically check the protective nets above the town, installed about ten years ago, to determine whether they were damaged in the fire and extreme heat. Particular attention is being paid to the Borkavanje area, known for landslides. Experts from Zagreb will also be involved in the assessment to determine how unstable the terrain is now and what risk heavier rains could pose. Over 90 completely or partially damaged buildings have already been recorded, and tomorrow 20 experts organised into ten teams will go out into the field. They will assess the structural integrity of the houses and determine which buildings residents can safely return to.
