June the 21st, 2025 – The small settlement of Pisak close to Omiš saw a major fire break out this morning. Attempts are being made to stabilise it. Residents and tourists however have had to evacuate, and homes have been swallowed by the flames.

Dalmatian wildfire season appears to already be firmly upon us and it’s only the first official day of summer. What this means as we head towards the very height of the season is yet to be seen. The huge Pisak fire was fought by both firefighters and locals this morning, as the bura winds caused the situation that would have otherwise been manageable to rapidly become out of control.

As Dnevnik reports, Pisak near Omiš was this summer’s first fire victim after bura spread the flames further than they’d naturally have gone on Saturday morning. The winds resulted in another new fire breaking out nearby just a little later on in the Dubci-Slime area.

“Several houses have burned down, the facades and the roofs. The number of firefighters has increased to 250. The fire is still not under control,” it was revealed by those on the ground. The firefighters present could also not safely extinguish the fire in a normal way due to the bura. Some of the residents and tourists in Marušići, a town near Pisak, as well as Mimice, had to be evacuated.

The Pisak fire saw the Adriatic Highway (Jadranska Magistrala) that passes just under the forested area in which the fire began closed, with firefighters struggling to gain any control over this serious situation. Tragically, scorched animal bones have been found, and homes and cars have gone up in flames as the wind is continuing to exacerbate the situation.
