September the 7th, 2026 – The Guardian has spotlighted gorgeous Cres, referring to it as Europe’s best hidden gem.
The influential Guardian was well and truly won over by the wilderness of the beautiful island of Cres and its crystal-clear sea, which we must protect if we want it to remain that way.
Morski reports that the very widely read British newspaper The Guardian published a selection of lesser-known European islands worth visiting. Among suggestions from numerous countries, Cres in the Kvarner archipelago took first place. Reader Rhiannon, whose recommendation was chosen as the best, particularly highlighted the island’s nature and its impressive griffon vultures.
The Guardian describes Cres as the least populated of the four large Kvarner islands. The island features a mix of the Tramuntana forests, rocky terrain, olive groves, lavender and hidden coves – all of which clearly left a strong impression on the British. The island is known for its hiking and cycling trails, as well as traditional gastronomy and, of course, Cres lamb.
A particularly special attraction are the rare griffon vultures, which nest on the cliffs above the sea. In the settlement of Beli, there is also a visitor centre and recovery centre for these special natural “hygienists” that we must carefully protect.
