June 22, 2023 – After 2.5 years since the devastating Petrinja earthquake, the removal of the first mobile housing units began. Recall, after the earthquake, donated containers were put up in settlements. They served as temporary accommodation for the affected families from the area.

Sanja Mandić Vuksanović, the adviser for civil protection and firefighting in the Administrative Department for Social Activities and Property of the City of Petrinja, confirmed that 51 users remain at the container settlement.

As Index writes, 22 CROSCO residential containers were taken away. Thirty-six people moved from those containers into adequate accommodation. Through a public tender, either a retirement home or an apartment in Sisak was provided. The state subsidizes the rent there as well, said Mandić Vuksanović.

This Friday, all CROSCO’s containers will be removed. Containers that were used for storage, laundry, and kitchen will be taken away, she added. Still, other users of mobile housing units at the settlement remain in containers donated by Turkey, a total of 51.

There were four container settlements in the area of Petrinj. In Prnjavor Čuntićki, in Češko Selo, in the suburban settlement of Mošćenica, and the largest one at Petrinja Sajmište. After the closure of those in Prnjavor Čuntićki and Češko Selo, the container settlement in Mošćenica is also about to close. Moreover, the lot in Mošćenića is likely to become a truck parking.

As a guest on Petrinja radio’s Trenica at the end of March, the mayor of Petrinja, Magdalena Komes, said there is a great possibility of placing people from mobile housing units in suitable housing by the end of the summer. In the days after the earthquake, 380 users moved into four container settlements in Petrinja. Now, another 51 users are waiting for suitable accommodation.
