Total Croatia News

The latest from the Croatian election fallout, as some voters go to the polls again.

Due to a small number of excess ballots, elections for the Croatian Parliament will be repeated on Sunday at seven polling stations, with complete official election results announced by the State Election Commission on Monday afternoon, reports Vecernji List and Novilist on November 15, 2015.

The elections will be repeated at polling stations in Osijek, Pakrac, Slunj, Šibenik and Zadar. The total number of registered voters at those polling stations is 2,903. State Election Commission will hold a press conference at 3 pm on Monday to announce the complete official results of the elections.

Sunday’s elections will determine who will represent Hungarian, and Albanian, Bosniak, Montenegrin, Macedonian and Slovenian national minorities in the Parliament. Šandor Juhas and Robert Jankovics are candidates of the Hungarian minority. Last Sunday, Juhas won 21 votes more than Jankovics. Ermina Lekaj Prljaskaj has a narrow lead of just three votes in front of second-ranked Idris Sulejmani as a candidate for the joint representative of other five national minorities.

Seventeen new members of parliament from MOST met yesterday near the Plitvice Lakes National Park. In addition to Drago Prgomet, who was not even invited to the meeting, Irena Petrijevčanin also did not show up. She has been elected on the MOST candidate list in the first constituency, together with Prgomet. However, MOST claims she had reasons why she could not come and is still with the party, just like Gordana Rusak, who was second on the list in the first constituency behind Drago Prgomet, and who came to Plitvice.

“We are discussing the issues connected with the continuation of negotiations with SDP and HDZ. So far, there will be no public announcements. We came here to meet in peace and come to an agreement”, Nikola Grmoja, MOST vice-president, said.

After five turbulent post-election days, during which they lost one of their most well-known members, MOST have decided to consolidate their ranks, demonstrate unity to the public and agree on further actions. It is certain that they plan to continue discussions with SDP and HDZ and have not given up on the idea of a unity government, despite open rejection by Tomislav Karamarko and Zoran Milanović’s attempt to make a separate deal with Drago Prgomet.

During the evening, Božo Petrov gave a short statement to the media and said that the discussions at Plitvice were fantastic, but has also announced that “because of the heavy responsibilities” the talks will continue on Sunday. Stipe Petrina, one of the present members of MOST, refused to answer the question whether the atmosphere at the talks was constructive or not, while Ivan Lovrinović said that the atmosphere was great. Asked if the government will be formed next week, Lovrinović answered: “We will form it in time.”

Drago Prgomet initially gave statements in which he supported only Božo Petrov as the next prime minister, but in recent statements he has expressed some doubts. He accused MOST that they have not been ready for such good election results and that they are trying to avoid the responsibility of being in government.
