ZAGREB, June 11, 2018 – Interior Minister Davor Božinović said on Monday that Croatia would not allow illegal migration and that it would not tolerate smugglers making money on the misfortune of others.
“We are open to the questioning of our work. However, we are sure that we are working in line with the law and the protection of national interests. We won’t allow illegal migration. We have a humane approach, but not towards those smuggling people or anyone involved in a network which is trying to make money on the misfortune of people coming from faraway parts of the world,” Božinović said in Slavonski Brod, where he attended Brod-Posavina County Police and Police Academy Open Day.
“We are watching the border. Brod-Posavina County has a 150-kilometre-long border, mainly river, thanks to which the number of illegal migrants in this part of Croatia is markedly smaller. Also, the police in this part of Croatia are doing an excellent job.”
Speaking of an investigation into an incident in which police opened fire on a van with illegal migrants, Božinović reiterated that fire was opened because the smuggler driving the van had endangered the life of a police officer.
He said police were holding open days to attract young people to the force, adding that 600 students would enrol in the police school this year. Contact with citizens and young people is important to show that the police are there for them and to guarantee them a safe childhood, he added.
