World Cup 2018 is Here: Send Us Your Best Croatian Fan Photos

Total Croatia News

The World Cup is days away, due to kick off on June 14, 2018, and passionate fans all over the globe are looking forward to a month-long football fest. A look at some of the craziest photos in Croatian colours.

Whatever happens on the pitch, there is no denying that Croatian fans are among the most passionate on the planet, and their trademark red and white chequers won the hearts of millions after their brilliant display on and off the pitch during the World Cup in France in 1998.

Some of the displays of patriotic support have been downright crazy during my 15 years here, and we thought we would take a look at some of them over the next few weeks, as all thoughts turn to football.

We begin with one of the craziest shots of all, taken by Stipe Surać three crazy summers ago, with commentary from a witness and alleged accomplice from Mali Iž.

For the Americans: We geniuses of Mali Iž head to an annual water polo match against neighboring Veli Iž on a flotilla of a dozen-plus boats tied side-by-side; an aquatic-tailgating clusterfuck of drums, loud music, and flare-shooting joyful drunks.

We dubbed it “Alajo Vez.” It may be one of the most fun and authentic things we do.

Yes, it probably violates maritime etiquette if not actual laws. No, we don’t care. Yes, we’ll likely get drunk and lose the water polo match. But as any high school athlete will tell you, the “Team Spirit” award goes to the real winners.
