Oreskovic in talks with ministers from the outgoing government.

Simultaneously with the discussions on the structure of the new government, both HDZ president Tomislav Karamarko and future Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković are in talks about how to widen the support for the new government, while Orešković is also meeting with candidates for ministers, reports Vecernji List, Tportal and Index.hr on January 7, 2016.

Karamarko recently met with all eight minority representatives in the Parliament, while Orešković has conducted the first interviews with candidates for ministers. He talked with Ante Ćorušić, head of HDZ’s Health Committee and a candidate for the post of health minister. The names of future ministers should be known by the end of next week.

In addition, Orešković will meet with certain members of IDS, among them the outgoing Tourism Minister Darko Lorencin. It is known that Orešković has already met with Ivan Vrdoljak (HNS), the outgoing Economy Minister, and he will talk with Anka Mrak-Taritaš (HNS), the outgoing Minister of Construction and Physical Planning.

“He contacted me this afternoon and asked for an informal conversation. We will meet tomorrow morning. I expect that he will show interest in the tourism sector. I am at his disposal”, said Lorencin for N1 television. The outgoing Tourism Minister did not answer whether there is a possibility for him to stay as minister. “We should look at the broader context. That is not for me to decide. There are IDS party bodies”, said Lorencin yesterday.

The intention is to strengthen the thin parliamentary majority. HDZ had long wanted an alliance with IDS, but the party decided to support SDP’s Croatia is Growing coalition. When it comes to minority representatives, Karamarko reportedly promised them that the rights of minorities will be in line with European standards. Serbian representative Milorad Pupovac said yesterday that they were told that the minority rights will be improved, and not reduced.

HDZ president Tomislav Karamarko commented on Facebook the fact that Prime Minister-designate Tihomir Orešković had confirmed that in recent days he spoke with several ministers from the outgoing government and that he will also meet with Minister Lorencin. “MOST and HDZ have enough quality people to form a government. This does not mean that we will not consider and perhaps accept some other suggestions. PM-designate Orešković is the one who decides and he may propose those who he thinks are the best solution. The fact that we are currently talking with ministers from the outgoing government does not mean that we are offering them to remain in their ministerial posts, but just that we want to gather as much information as possible about the state of government affairs. This is a normal process in all democratic societies in which the smooth transfer of power is more important than inter-party conflicts. I thank the outgoing ministers who understand that”, wrote Karamarko.
