It is hot and dry in eastern Hvar…
Taps in the eastern parts of Hvar island have been dry since last night and according to the mayor of Sućuraj Ivan Slavić, it is because Hvar is being sabotaged by Makarska! Slavić stated that Makarska Waterworks has closed the main pipe which distributes the water towards Hvar. However, director of Makarska waterworks Jože Markić denies that any foul play is involved stating that the water supply to Hvar is within possible limits considering the current consumption and high temperatures.
“We are distributing maximum amounts of water through the regional pipeline. Pipeline to Hvar is not closed, we are experiencing a technical problem since the incoming pipe is 50 cm above the height of the regional pipeline and despite the maximum water-flow from Cetina river, in case of increased consumption, as we’ve witnessed over the last two days, parts of Hvar can be temporarily left without water” – Markić commented.
During the weekend, average consumption on Makarska Riviera was over 33000 cubic meters per day, and because of extremely high temperatures and the arrival of more than 50 000 tourists in the area from Gradac to Brela it is technically impossible to ensure additional amounts of running water.
Mayor of Makarska, Tonči Bilić commented on the accusations made by the Sućuraj mayor Slamić stating that there is no sabotage or intentional closure of the Hvar pipeline and that all accusations are nothing more than a cheap stunt for political points.
