The Mossad agent has allegedly killed a Hamas engineer in 2016.
The Tunisian Justice Ministry on Wednesday announced that the Israeli agent accused of murdering of a Hamas engineers had been arrested in Croatia, according to Times of Israel, reports Jutarnji List on May 3, 2018.
Both Hezbollah and Hamas have accused Mossad of the murder of Mohammed Zouari (49), who was killed in front of his own home in the Tunisian port town of Sfax in December 2016.
Last year, Hamas claimed that Israeli spies had used Bosnian-Herzegovinian passports to enter Tunisia and kill Zouari, who was also a Belgian citizen.
The Israeli media report, referring to the information from the Tunisian Justice Ministry, that the suspected spy was arrested two months ago in Croatia, but that the Croatian authorities are allegedly refusing to extradite him to Tunisia.
Hamas has confirmed that Zouari, who was an aeronautical engineer and a Tunisian citizen, was the central figure in their weapons development programme. They considered him a pioneer in the development of drones.
Israel has not yet assumed responsibility for the assassination and refuses to respond to the charges made by Hamas that it is responsible for the murder of the engineer. However, shortly after Zouari’s assassination, Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Liberman alluded to the possibility that the engineer was a target. “If someone was killed in Tunisia, it is highly likely that he was not a peace activist or a candidate for the Nobel Prize,” said Liberman, adding that Israel would continue to “protect its interests.”
The assassination came into focus after another Hamas weapons expert was recently murdered in Kuala Lumpur. Fadi Mohammad al-Batsh (35) was killed in front of a mosque. Although his relatives and Hamas have accused Mossad of yet another murder, Israel has dismissed the charges.
