As elections get closer, history and extremism are out and economy and moderation are in.

Milijan Brkić, HDZ deputy president, spoke on Thursday morning at the opening of the Summer University of the European Ideas Network in Split, and he discussed the likely direction that HDZ would take in the future, reports Večernji List on June 30, 2016.

“The EU countries are faced with aging population and declining birth rates, and such trends are present in Croatia. In such a situation, we must coordinate our policies within the European Union in order to encourage demographic renewal. We need a more effective migration policy, which will encourage legal migration of the population, based on an analysis of the labour market. Our mission is to provide a better life for citizens, who will not worry about what will happen tomorrow and whether the young will find a job after completing their education. Let us not deal with the beautification of the history. We should learn from the past, but let us turn towards the present and the future”, said Brkić.

“The economic recovery must be based on possibilities”, said Brkić, adding that “we need to turn towards the restructuring of the economy, in order to raise competitiveness and excel in innovation. Countries are aware of problems and what they should do, but implementation is still lagging behind and is not proceeding at a pace that we have set”, he added.

He stressed that countries must be able to make better use of the possibilities which have been opened to them due to European policies and instruments at their disposal. Energy independence in which Croatia plays an important role, common digital market, strengthening of cohesion policy; these are all very important elements for mutual cooperation and progress.

“We are in turbulent times. The European Union more than ever needs to demonstrate unity and show responsibility. That is the only way we can get out of the crisis much stronger, more powerful, so that we can implement all those programs that we have set”, said Brkić.
