MP Mirando Mrsić Expelled from SDP

ZAGREB, March 24, 2018 – The Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) Main Committee decided on Saturday to oust its MP and former labour minister Mirando Mrsić from the party after 20 years, with 40 votes for, eight against and four abstentions, because he refused to pull his bill on contributions from parliamentary procedure.

The expulsion was proposed by the party Presidency because Mrsić forwarded his bill into procedure without the permission of the party’s parliamentary group and contrary to decisions by the party’s Presidency, Expert Council and labour and pension system task force.

During the debate on Mrsić’s fate in the SDP, some said it was not social democratic to oust him and that his bill was in line with the social democratic policy.

After being expelled, Mrsić said he was “disappointed” by the main committee’s decision. “This is a political ousting,” he said, adding that the “bad trends” in the party would continue and that “it’s only a matter of time before a moral, personnel and political airing within the SDP and then I will come back.”

Mrsić said he would continue to work in parliament as an independent member.
