President Grabar-Kitarović Visits Croatian Soldiers in Afghanistan

After her official visit to Iran, the President comes in an unannounced visit to Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif.

Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović arrived in unannounced visit to members of the Croatian military contingent in Afghanistan, announced her office in a statement, reports Index.hr on May 20, 2016.

“After the official visit to Iran, President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović and Defence Secretary Josip Buljević visited members of the Croatian contingent which is part of the Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan”, reads the statement. This is the fourth Croatian contingent (HRVCON) which is in Afghanistan as part of Resolute Support mission.

“During their short stay in Mazar-e-Sharif and Kabul, in addition to meetings with members of the Croatian contingent, the President and the Defence Minister are scheduled to meet with Afghan officials, commanders of the mission and representatives of the UN and NATO”, says the statement.

The commander of the 4th HRVCON is Brigadier Mato Matanović. The contingent includes 97 members: in addition to 75 members of the Croatian Armed Forces, it includes representatives of several other countries: Montenegro (17), Albania (2), Bosnia and Herzegovina (2) and Macedonia (1).

This is the second visit of Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović to Afghanistan since becoming the President. In May last year, she was in an official visit to the country. At that time, she also visited Croatian army units in Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif, met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and other officials, commanders of the Resolute Support mission and the NATO civilian representative.
