First Brkić, then Borković, and now…?

Talking about the selection of new veterans affairs minister, Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković said yesterday in Brussels that he hoped there would be several candidates for the post. He added that the new minister would be appointed “as soon as possible”, report index.hr and tportal.hr on March 8, 2016.

“On Friday, I met with veterans. I was working over the weekend, Today I am in Brussels and tomorrow I will return to Croatia. I hope to have several candidates like I had before, but I will not communicate names of the candidates because I do not think it would be fair. At the end, when we finally select the veterans affairs’ minister, then I will communicate that to you”, said Orešković asked to comment on the candidacy of Branko Borković, who was yesterday proposed as the new minister by veterans associations from Vukovar.

Asked whether the name of the new minister would be known by the end of this week, Orešković answered: “As soon as possible.”

On Monday, the prime minister was in Brussels where he participated in a summit of EU leaders with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to discuss the resolution of the migrant crisis.

Meanwhile, also commenting on the candidacy of Branko Borković, HDZ president and First Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Karamarko said that he was a good candidate, but stressed that HDZ secretary general Milijan Brkić was the best candidate to become the minister and that HDZ stood firmly behind him. “We have our own candidate. Mr. Milijan Brkić is the best candidate. I think there is no better candidate and we will stand behind him”, said Karamarko to reporters in Slavonski Brod.

Asked to comment on Prime Minister Tihomir Orešković’s invitation for other candidates to be proposed, Karamarko said that HDZ respected the prime minister’s invitation, but that they already had a candidate for the post. “The prime minister likes to work like that. We respect that, but we have a candidate for the position which, as they say, belongs to HDZ”, he said, adding that they do not consider the prime minister’s invitation as a sign of doubt in their own candidate.
