ZAGREB, August 13, 2018 – The two migrants, who were found dead in a forest near the Croatian town of Ogulin on Sunday morning, were killed by a rock-slide that occurred in Drežnica Forest, as indicated by the findings of a police preliminary investigation into the cause of their death, the law enforcement authorities in Karlovac County reported on Monday.
The Karlovac County police stated on Sunday that, after a tip from locals, they had intercepted a group of 10 migrants in Drežnica Forest, and another two who had apparently died en route.
The on-site investigation found that the victims died when rocks from the upper part of the forest path fell on them.
The police have informed the Office of Prosecutor of the case and requested autopsy. They have not yet revealed the identity of the victims.
The ten irregular migrants, who were found in that forest, have in the meantime expressed intention to seek international protection and have been transferred to an asylum seekers’ centre in the capital of Zagreb.
A rising number of migrants coming via western Bosnia and passing through central Croatia on their way to west and north Europe have been spotted on this route through Karlovac County recently.
