June the 24th, 2025 – Poreč beaches are once again proudly flying 18 Blue Flags. It’s therefore the destination with the best-maintained and cleanest beaches not only in Croatia, but also beyond it.

Blue Flags are considered to be iternational awards and symbols of a fantastically well-preserved environment. Poreč beaches are adorned with 18 Blue Flags once again this year. It proves that this beautiful Istrian location has successfully met all of the very stringent criteria of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

Poreč and its beaches can therefore boast of the largest number of Blue Flags in a relatively narrow coastal strip. As stated, they make it the destination with the best-maintained and cleanest beaches in Croatia and beyond its borders. The joint celebration of the raising of the Blue Flag is traditionally held every year on a different beach, either the city beach or the concessionaire of the Blue Lagoon or Valamar. This year, it was held on the Špadići-Materada beach in the presence of representatives of the City of Poreč-Parenzo, the Tourist Board of the City of Poreč, Valamar Riviera and Plava Laguna (Blue Lagoon).

The Blue Flags have adorned Poreč beaches for many years now, flying proudly as confirmation of the quality of the sea water, the high level of beach management, the presence of a lifeguard service, and other facilities that are key to obtaining this recognition. This summer, the Blue Flag will be flown on three city beaches – Špadići – Materada, Donji Špadići and the City Beach, ten beaches managed by Plava Laguna, – the Ulika campsite, the Laguna Materada hotels, Laguna Galijot, Laguna Parentium, Molindrio, Lotosi and Delfin, the Bellevue hotel complex, and the Zelena Laguna and Bijela Uvala campsites. They’ll also be on four Valamara beaches – Brulo, Borik, Val Marea Sandy Family Beach in Špadići, and Maro Sandy Sunrise Beach on the island of Sveti Nikola. The Parentium marina also received the Blue Flag.

The Director of the Tourist Board, Nenad Velenik, recalled that the Blue Flag project in Poreč first appeared about fifteen years ago. It was immediately welcomed by both the public and private sectors. He also stressed the importance of caring for the sea as the most important natural resource of all.

“I’m immensely proud that Poreč beaches have been adorned with Blue Flags for many years now. I’m also thrilled that this is the city with the most Blue Flags in all of Croatia! This is a sign that we have clean sea water, well-maintained and safe beaches, and this didn’t just happen by chance. A big thank you goes out to everyone who has been working hard for years on this – from the Tourist Board, Valamar and Plava Laguna, to our city services. They all invest hard work, time and will to make our sea water and coastline the way Poreč deserves it to be. Over the last few years, the city administration, together with the Tourist Board and with the help of the Ministry of Tourism and Sport, has invested a lot in the improvement of our city beaches,” Velenik stated.

“We’re trying to improve the beaches evenly, throughout our entire area, and we’ll continue to do so. We want it to be so that every single one of Poreč’s residents and guests can enjoy the beauty and well-maintained nature of our beaches. It’s our duty and obligation to preserve this valuable resource, whether through beach improvement, the work of the purifiers, municipal equipment or anything else,” said Mayor Loris Peršurić.

The Blue Flag was raised by Mayor Loris Peršurić and Nenad Velenik. They were joined by representatives of tourism companies and the lifeguards who work to ensure safety at the beaches, which is another criteria that must be met in order to be granted the Blue Flag.

Incidentally, the Lijepa naša Association is the national coordinator and manager of the Blue Flag project in Croatia. The intellectual owner of the Blue Flag and the international manager of this programme is the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), established in 1981. Currently, more than 45 countries around the world are included in the programme, for which tourism is one of the strategic goals.
