Potential Site for New Animal Shelter Visited by Mayor of Dubrovnik

Positive steps forward for one of the promises made by newly elected Dubrovnik Mayor Mato Franković.

Žarkovica, a makeshift animal shelter without electricity or running water, located on top of a lonely mountain above the Pearl of the Adriatic and run solely by the good will of the tireless animal lover Sandra Sambrailo and her team of volunteers, has been a subject of emotionally charged debate for many years.

Controversial former Dubrovnik Mayor Andro Vlahušić did absolutely nothing to aid Sandra in her efforts, nor did he lift a finger for the innocent animals who have made no mistake other than to be born into a careless environment. A shameful and unjustifiable fact given the astronomical amount of money Dubrovnik pulls in each year.

With all this being said, it looks as if the tide is about to change as newly elected Mato Franković sets about fulfilling one of his more popular election promises – the construction of a proper shelter, equipped with everything both volunteers and abandoned animals need for comfortable lives.

As DuList reported on the 19th of July, 2017, yesterday, Franković and his associates visited a potential location for a new shelter, a decision previously passed by the City Council. The area, which has a total area of almost 32,000 square meters would be perfect, and although the final realisation of the long-awaited project would depend upon the opinion of the local committee, it definitely holds considerable promise.

“A shelter owned and managed by the City of Dubrovnik, which provides quality care for abandoned animals, is not only a legal but also a civil obligation,” said Mayor Franković after visiting the potential site. He reiterated the fact that the goal of the City of Dubrovnik was to build the shelter within a year.
