2019 World Championship: Follow Croatia Handball in Germany and Denmark

From January 10 to 27, 2019, the Handball World Championship will take place in Germany and Denmark, where Croatia handball will compete against Iceland, Japan, Macedonia, Bahrain, and Spain.

The handball madness returns this week as the 2019 World Championship begins! For the first time in history, the World Championship will be played in two countries, as Germany and Denmark will co-host the tournament from January 10 to 27, reports Gol.hr on January 7, 2019.

Compared to the World Championship played in France two years ago, the International Handball Federation (IHF) has also changed the format of the competition. While there are still 24 national teams in four groups of six teams, the knockout phase will not begin after the group stage, as was the case in France. Instead, two new groups will be formed, consisting of the three top teams in each group from the first round. In these newly created groups, the two best national teams will go to the semifinals.

The Croatia national handball team will fight in Group B, hosted by Munich at Olympiahalle. Lino Červar’s men will compete against Iceland, Japan, Macedonia, Bahrain, and Spain.

In addition to achieving the ultimate goal of being one of the first three teams in the group and thus advancing further in the competition, it will be imperative to win as many points as possible, as the top three teams will take those points with them to the second round.

In the second round, the Croatian ‘Cowboys’ await the three best teams from Group A, which includes France, Germany, Russia, Serbia, Brazil, and Korea. If Croatia makes it to the second round, they will head to the Lanxess Arena in Cologne.

The semifinals will be played in Hamburg, while the third-place match and the final will be played in Herning, Denmark.
