life and faith, and recent challenges
Željko Babić, coach of the Croatian men’s national handball team which won the bronze medal at the recent EHF EURO 2016 in Poland, visited Međugorje on February 4, 2016, and met with the local Franciscan, clergy.
He talked to Vecernji list about his experiences in life and faith and recent challenges he had during the European Championship. “You should pray to Our Lady because therein are the power and happiness”, said Babić in an interview with a local radio. While in Međugorje, Babić received blessed rosaries for the whole team.
Babić drew considerable interest when, in interviews after the miraculous victory against Poland at the recent European Championships, he repeatedly expressed his strong commitment to Međugorje and said that he believed that the victory was created by “The Miracle of Međugorje”. “I did not believe in a miracle. I have asked my Jesus to forgive me for my weak faith, but I wanted to win and we have prepared well for it. I would never bet against Jesus and Our Lady of Međugorje, never”, said Babić at the time. “This is a miracle which has come from Jesus, thank you, Jesus. We had a lot of luck, but everything is possible for those who are believers. Thank you Jesus and Our Lady of Međugorje, thank you the Holy Spirit”, Babić continued.
Only later did he mention that his players might also have been at least partially responsible for the amazing win. While some fans questioned whether religion and sports should be mixed in such a way, there were many who shared and supported Babić’s enthusiasm for Međugorje.
