Croats in Roland Garros: Mate Pavić in Men’s and Mixed Doubles Quarters

The best doubles player in the world continues dominating Roland Garros.

June 4, 2018 – It has been a stellar ride for Mate Pavić, the Split native who at just 24-years-old has won the Australian and US Open, and made it to the Wimbledon final in pairs in the last year. 2018 proved even better for the Croatian player, who last month was named number one in the world on the ATP ranking for doubles. Pavić is the first Croatian tennis player ever to achieve such a feat.

At Roland Garros, known as the premier clay court tennis event in the world and the second of four annual Grand Slam tournaments, Pavić continues to succeed.

Mate Pavić and men’s doubles partner, Austrian tennis player Oliver Marach, continued their year-long winning streak in Grand Slam tournaments after advancing to the quarterfinal of Roland Garros. A 6:3, 3:6 and 6:3 win in the third round over Salvadorian Marcelo Arevalo and America’s James Cerretani pushed the pair into the quarterfinal match whose date has yet to be announced.

Pavić and Marach will play against Colombians Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah who, in three sets, defeated Koolhof and Sitak (3:6, 6:4, 6:3). The Roland Garros quarters will be a replay of this year’s Australian Open final, where Pavić and Marach overcame the Colombians 6:4, 6:4.

Zagreb tennis player Nikola Mektić will also play in the quarterfinals with doubles partner Alexander Peya who await a fight against Indian player Rohan Bopanna and French player Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

After winning in male pairs, Mate Pavić also triumphed in mixed pairs with Canadian tennis player Gabriela Dabrowski. The Australian Open champions and first-seeded competitors in the mixed doubles competition continued their winning streak in France as well, where on Sunday they overcame Czech player Andrea Hlaváčková and French player Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-2, 6-3. This was the seventh consecutive victory of the Croatian-Canadian mixed pair and the second in Paris.

Pavić and Dabrowski will face Demi Schuurs and Matwe Middelkoop of the Netherlands in Monday’s quarterfinals.

Ivan Dodig will also play in the mixed doubles quarterfinals on Monday with his Taiwanese partner Latisha Chan.
