Rovinj continues its reputation as an innovative tourism destination, with the region’s first beach polo tournament this weekend.
Final preparations are under way on Rovinj’s Porton Biondi beach for the Rovinj Beach Polo Tournament, the first Beach Polo Tournament in the region. This sport, first played in England in 19th century was always known as noble and luxurious event. Rovinj, with its unique town centre and amazing location by the sea side, is a great choice for the polo tournament which will overlook St. Euphemia Church. The tournament will take place over four days from May 12, 2016. The four international teams on fifty-odd Argentinian horses will go head to head with each other in this royal sport in a field inside a 7,000 square-meter arena.
The preparations for the tournament are almost done, after a month of adjusting the field according to the beach polo rules. The whole area will have a 70×40 m sandy field, stables, lounge zone and exhibition space. The tournament is supported by strong sponsors such as Adris group and Agrokor, as well as luxury brands like Tagheuer, Bentley and Tiffany.
During the tournament, Rovinj will host a large number of beach polo fans, including various VIPs. Among the tournament’s guests of honour is the American entrepreneur & designer and a former wife of USA republican candidate Donald Trump – Ivana Trump, who used to travel with her parents from the Czech Republic to Croatia on vacation. Ivana remembers her vacation in Croatia by “clean sea, great food and very friendly people” and is looking forward to her first visit to Rovinj.
The tournament starts on Thursday, May 12, with a welcome party, and closes on Sunday with closing ceremony and announcing the winners. The whole weekend will be filled with polo matches and evening entertainment. Especially interesting event will be Polo Parade from EX TDR to the centre of Rovinj.
This event is not only unique for this region and Croatia but also will add extra value to Rovinj as a destination which is already recognised as one of the most successful tourist towns (recently on the Days of Croatian tourism 2015.). Finally, Rovinj Beach Polo will attract tourists to visit in preseason and maybe derive investment from international sponsors and partners to make Rovinj an even more attractive place to visit.
