Donna Vekić Eliminates World No. 2 from St. Petersburg Open

Croatian tennis player Donna Vekić achieved the biggest win of her career on Friday. 

Donna Vekić, currently Croatia’s best female tennis player, defeated World No. 2 Czech player Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-1 in the St. Petersburg Open on Friday. Vekić has thus achieved the best result of her career after knocking out the two-time Wimbledon winner and defending champion at WTA tournament in St. Peterburg and will fight in the semifinal on Saturday afternoon, reports Gol.hr on February 1, 2019. 

The Osijek-native claimed the victory in one hour and 23 minutes of play and managed to take the service of the left-handed player five times in the game. Recall, Kvitova also arrived in St. Peterburg arrived losing in the Australian Open final to Naomi Osaka. 

Vekić already came to the break in the first set of the game, but Kvitova immediately returned in the next game. There was not another chance to break until the ninth game, when at 40-15, Vekić came to the advantage and in the next game used it to win the first set.

In the second set, Kvitova was only able to keep her pace for two games, and then the 22-year-old Vekić nailed five games for her biggest career win, and third against the top five of the WTA ranking.

Donna managed to save a break in the 4-1 lead and saved three of the four in the match, which was one of the main reasons for her triumph against Kvitova. Vekić also played a great defensive game that forced Kvitova to make a lot of errors. Thus, the Czech player finished the match with 42 unforced errors, while Vekić only made 17.

Vekić will play against 34-year-old Russian Vera Zvonareva on Saturday in the semifinal at 1:30 pm. Zvonareva is currently ranked 95th on the WTA ranking.
