Euro 2020 Qualifiers: Croatia to Open and Close Group Games at Home

Daniela Rogulj

From March 21 to November 16, 2019, Croatia will play their qualifying matches for Euro 2020.

As was announced on Sunday, Croatia’s opponents in the 2020 European Championship qualifiers will be Wales, Slovakia, Hungary, and Azerbaijan, which was decided in a draw in Dublin. UEFA has now announced the schedule for the upcoming qualifying matches, reports Gol.hr on December 2, 2018.

The two best-placed teams in each qualifying group will advance to the European Championship in 2020. Additional qualifications will be played by the best teams of the Nations League in March of 2020 which are not part of the regular qualifications.

The additional qualifications are secured for the 16 winners of the Nations League groups. If a national team already advances through the regular qualifications, their place will go to the next best team in their Nations League group. Croatia will, therefore, be a part of the additional qualifiers if England and Spain advance to the Euro through regular qualifications.

However, Croatia is the favorite of their Euro qualifying group, and it would be a great surprise if they do not easily guarantee either first or second place in the qualifiers.

The good news is that Croatia will open and close their qualifications at home. Croatia’s first opponent will be Azerbaijan, who will visit Croatia on March 21, 2019, scheduled at 20:45. The final match of the qualifiers against Slovakia is also scheduled in Croatia on November 16, 2019, at 20:45.

Since Croatia is in a group with five teams, they will have two terms for friendly matches – in June and November.
