Marin Čilić Advances to Quarters of Monte Carlo Masters After Raonic Withdraws

Marin Čilić plunged into the quarterfinal of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament after Canadian tennis player Milos Raonic retired from the competition.

Marin Čilić has advanced to the quarterfinal of Monte Carlo without having to score a single point in the third round against Milos Raonic. The Canadian withdrew from the competition before the match after developing knee problems from the second round against Marco Cecchinato, reports Gol.hr on April 19, 2018.

For the third time, Čilić will play in the quarterfinal of Monte Carlo after failing to score the semifinals the last two years. Though Čilić will not lose a point from this previous round, the bad news is that Alexander Zverev, according to the current (live) status on the ATP ladder, has surpassed Marin Čilić. With today’s win against Struff, Zverev earned 90 points and therefore skipped Čilić on the ATP ladder.

If they both lose in the next round, Zverev would be the third world player on Monday, while Čilić could even drop to fifth! Namely, Grigor Dimitrov has thrown out Kohlschreiber and is now very close to Croatia’s best tennis player. To skip him, Dimitrov would have to play in the final, and Čilić would have to lose in the quarterfinal.

In the quarterfinal, Marin will play against the winner of the duel between Andreas Seppi and Kei Nishikori. Zverev will play in the quarters against the best of his brother Mischa Zverev and Richard Gasquet, while Dimitrov will play against David Goffin.
