On July 11, 1998, Croatia’s ‘Bronze Generation’ got its name.
July 11, 2018 – The Croatia national team is preparing for the historic semi-final of the World Cup tonight against England – and while everyone rightly believes that Zlatko Dalić’s side could be in the final against France on July 15th, there is extra motivation for Luka Modrić & Co. heading into the decisive match against England tonight.
On this date exactly 20 years ago, Croatia achieved the greatest success in its football history after winning the bronze of the 1998 World Cup in France. Three days after Croatia lost to the host nation 2:1, Ćiro Blažević’s squad defeated Holland 2:1 in the game for third place at the Parc des Princes in Paris – and the achievement has been celebrated ever since. Goals by Robert Prosinećki in the 13th minute and Davor Šuker in the 35th minute wrote history for Croatian football.

Croatia’s current generation has mostly lived in the shadow of Šuker, Boban, Prosinečki and the success of the ‘Bronze Generation’, though tonight they have an opportunity to surpass the already monumental July 11th date, and be the team to take Croatia one step further – the World Cup final.
There, France would wait for Croatia again, just like they did in Saint-Denis on July 8, 1998.
