Three Croatian Tennis Players Advance to Second Round of Australian Open!

A good start for some of Croatia’s best tennis players in Melbourne for the Australian Open!

Croatian tennis players Marin Čilić, Petra Martić, and Ivo Karlović have advanced to the second round of the Australian Open Grand Slam tournament, reports Gol.hr on January 15, 2018. 

Croatia’s best tennis player Marin Čilić celebrated over Canadian Vasek Pospisil, 105th in the ATP rankings, after three hours and 17 minutes of play. Čilić defeated Pospisil 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (5). Čilić served 20 aces, and his rival only 12. Čilić won 72 percent of his points on the first serve, and 58 percent on the second. He saved three out of five break balls, and Pospisil took the serve five times. The Canadian made six double errors. This was the second win for Marin Čilič over Pospisil in the same number of matches.

In the second round, Čilić will play against the winner of the match between Portugal’s Joao Sousa and Germany’s Dustin Brown. Čilić has played Sousa, who is 70th in the ATP rankings, three times and has celebrated each time. Against Brown, the 129th tennis player in the world, Čilić has lost once. 

Female Croatian tennis player Petra Martić advanced to the second round of the tournament after winning against Belgian Van Uytvanck 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 in an hour and 36 minutes of play. Although the Belgian had served four aces, and Martić, not one, the Croatian tennis player was better. Uytvanck took the serve five times and lost three times.

In the second round, Petra Martić is expecting a tough rival, Romania’s Irina Camelia Begu, who is 32nd in the WTA ranking. The two players have yet to meet in a duel.

Ivo Karlović has easily crossed into the second round of the Australian Open. In the first round, Karlović beat Serbian tennis player Laslo Đere 7-6 (3), 6-2, 7-6 (2) after two hours and 25 minutes of play. The Croatian tennis player served 21 aces, and his rival took the serve twice. This was the first match between the two players. For passage into the third round, Karlović will have to advance over Japan’s Yuichi Sugita, the 40th best tennis player in the world. The two have yet to play one another.

Unfortunately, Borna Ćorić finished his Australian Open on Monday after losing to Australian tennis player John Millman after two hours and 20 minutes of play. Millman defeated Ćorić 7-5, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round. Millman served to win ten aces, while Corić served two. This was the first mutual encounter between Ćorić and the Australian, who is 122nd in the ATP ranking.
