Croatian tennis player Borna Ćorić advanced to the 2nd round of the US Open.
At the start of the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, Borna Ćorić defeated German player Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, reports Gol.hr on August 28, 2018.
Ćorić dominated in the first two sets of the match and quickly came to the advantage of 6-2, 6-2, and when he took Mayer’s service in the first game of the third set, it seemed he would soon finish the job. However, Ćorić lost his break advantage in the next game at 5-6, forcing the game into the fourth set.
Just as in the third set of the match, Ćorić set off with a break, but this time he managed to keep it to the end.
Ćorić will play in the 2nd round against Spaniard Roberto Carballes who defeated American player Mitchell Krueger on Monday.
Earlier on Monday, Donna Vekic was not as successful in the first round, losing to 19th-seed Latvian player Anastasia Sevastova 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
In the first game, Vekić missed the breakpoint, and at the end of the first set, lost her service twice. In the second set, however, Vekić opened with two breaks and achieved a 3-0 advantage. Though Sevastova led 3-2, Vekić managed to connect three games in a row to take the duel to the 3rd set.
In the first game of the decisive set, Vekić failed to take advantage of any of the three opportunities to take her opponent’s service, and until the end of the duel, she no longer had the chance to break. On the other hand, Sevastova used her only break point in the fourth game of the third set and managed to keep it in the end.
After Donna, Petra Martić also failed to advance to the 2nd round of the tournament, losing to Czech player Lucie Šafářová 6:4, 6:4 after an hour and a half of play.
Marin Čilić will kick off his US Open tournament on Tuesday at approximately 6:15pm against Marius Copli.
