Nikola Mektić will play in the US Open doubles final on Saturday.

Croatian Davis Cup representative Nikola Mektić and 32-year-old Polish player Alicja Rosolska advanced to the US Open mixed doubles final after defeating China’s Shuai Zhang and Australia’s John Peers 2-6, 6-4, 10-7, reports Gol.hr on September 6, 2018.

Mektić and Rosolska will compete for their first Grand Slam trophy against multiple Grand Slam winners in individual and mixed pairs, American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and British Jamie Murray who defeated American duo Christina McHale and Christian Harrison 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 in the semifinal.

Mekić can become the third Croatian tennis player in history and the third in this season to win a mixed doubles title, and the second to win the US Open doubles trophy, where Mate Pavić triumphed with Germany’s Laura Siegemund in 2016. Pavić also won this year’s Australian Open with Canadian player Gabriela Dabrowski, and Ivan Dodig won Roland Garros with Tai player Latisha Chan.

The mixed doubles final is scheduled for Saturday morning, ahead of the individual semi-final competition.

Marin Čilić failed to reach the semi-final of the US Open after losing to Kei Nishikori 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6- 4 after four hours and seven minutes of play.
