“Do you know who Marin Čilić is?”
The ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells is considered the biggest tournament in tennis after the four Grand Slams of the season – some even think it’s so important they consider it the “fifth” Grand Slam tournament of the season, anyhow. Each year, Indian Wells boasts a lineup of the best tennis stars of today, which, of course, would have to include Croatia’s best tennis player and world number 3, Marin Čilić.
Though Čilić had an early exit from Indian Wells this year after he suffered a defeat in the third round by Philipp Kohlschreiber, you would think that most fans of tennis would still know a thing or two about Croatia’s best player – he did lose to Roger Federer in the final of the Australian Open in January.
To see just how much the tennis community at Indian Wells knew about Marin, Ante Kvartuc from US-based portal Croatian Sports hit the average spectator of the tournament to find out.
Surprisingly (although as an American writing this I am not so surprised), most of the spectators didn’t have a clue as to who Marin Čilić is. Not to mention that he was the second seed of the very tournament they were attending.
Some answers were rather entertaining, and one fan even blamed not passing geography class in school as the reason they didn’t know who Marin was. “Chili con carne” was another answer given by a spectator at the tournament when asked what comes to her mind when she hears the name “Marin Čilić”.
One of the favorite reactions, however, was that of Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic who Kvartuc was able to grab for the very same question. His answer, though he used no words at all, says everything.
